Critics Consensus

The One I Love doesn't take its intriguing premise quite as far as it could, but it still adds up to an ambitious, well-acted look at love and marriage.

The One I Love | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Screenwriter Justin Lader's feature film debut is nothing short of stunning and hopefully signals a prolific career ahead. Meanwhile, director Charlie McDowell's first feature effort similarly allows for such a unique exploration of the trials of romance. Rated: B+ Sep 2, 2017 Full Review The One I Love | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald The film owes everything to its actors and particularly to Moss, who is capable of constantly surprising reactions, like the flurry of little nods Sophie gives to express delight. Rated: 3/5 Nov 26, 2014 Full Review The One I Love | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Richard Brody The New Yorker Ethan and Sophie are never more than playthings of the premise; Moss and Duplass are the sole sources of nuance and vitality, and they seem unduly hemmed in by the movie's unimaginative confines. Sep 5, 2014 Full Review The One I Love | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Justine Smith Vague Visages A fever dream of marital discontent, Charlie McDowell’s The One I Love tackles a failing marriage with sci-fi panache. Jun 6, 2024 Full Review The One I Love | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema Moss is good, but Duplass steals the show. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 30, 2021 Full Review The One I Love | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Jim Rohner Battleship Pretension While I can't divulge much else for the sake of keeping the plot a surprise, I will say that the house has something unexpected in store for the young couple, raising questions for them and us about what it is that defines the one we love. Audience Member It’s quite an interesting analyzation of love and marriage. Both leads work very well together finding their faults and successes being alone or with each other. It’s a very zany story with plenty of twists but it should’ve reached higher in terms of its storytelling. There are stronger stories out there like this one. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Logan D When their therapist tells them their relationship is out of tune, a married couple takes his advice to stay at a secluded estate for a weekend Weird things begin occurring. Elisabeth Moss can do no wrong! And I'm so happy such a talented actress loves doing genre films. I highly recommend Shining Girls. As expected not only does she excel at overt expressions but I love her subtle shifts with her facial features and posture. Duplass holds his own as well. An exploration of idealizing marriage. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Julie W If you are looking for the story to make sense or end well, then stop now. Both actors are intriguing and make the most of a difficult story. It’s both insightful & scary. Sometimes it’s hard to face the truth. The ending couldn’t work in real life as at least two of the characters would have family & friends who would guess that something was amiss. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/11/24 Full Review Chris S What did I just watch? Elizabeth Moss character infuriated me from the get go and Mark Duplass character was such a terrible person. Who are the dopplegangers? Where did they come from? And what was with the therapist, did he try to con them? Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Regina P I've seen 3 movies with this same premise. A couple is cloned, and the spouses end up preferring the clone. (These weren't literal clones, but same idea) Foe. Recreator, And this one-- The One I Love. This one was decent. The acting and the dialogue was fine. What threw me off was just not liking either partner. I didn't feel sorry for either one. They didn't belong together. They should have separated long ago. They were both dishonest and deceptive with each other. They didn't even have kids. What was their excuse for torturing each other by staying? I suppose that's the point. People don't have the courage to move on, but a clone gives them that exit. Ok, fine.
