India suffered a gloomy day in Paris after three of their top medal contenders were ousted from the Games. Amid the gloom, Swapnil Kusale’s bronze offered the only silver lining.
Swapnil Kusale won the bronze medal in the men’s 50m 3 positions final to add a third medal to India’s tally at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday. The 28-year-old shooter also became the first Indian Olympic medallist in the event.
Lakshya Sen beat compatriot HS Prannoy in an all-Indian round of 16. Sen, 22, is only the third Indian men’s singles badminton player to make the quarter-final at the Olympics.
Shockingly, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and PV Sindhu in badminton and boxer Nikhat Zareen crashed out.
The top-ranked Indian men’s doubles badminton duo lost to Malaysian pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the quarter-finals. He Bingjiao, meanwhile, won in straight games against PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, in the round of 16.
Reigning Asian Games champion Wu Yu beat Nikhat Zareen 5:0 in the women’s 50kg round of 16 boxing match.
World record holder Sift Kaur Samra also missed out on making the women’s 50m 3 positions final.
Despite taking an early lead, India lost 2-1 against Belgium in their penultimate men’s hockey Pool B match.
Archer Pravin Jadhav was knocked out in the men's individual round of 64.
Athletics, golf and sailing events kicked off today. Indian athletes, headlined by Priyanka Goswami, however, failed to make an impression in the race walk event.
Sailing: Nethra Kumanan finishes sixth in race 1
Making her second Olympic appearance, Indian sailor Nethra Kumanan finished sixth in race 1 of the women’s dinghy sailing competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The second race has been postponed to tomorrow (August 2).
A total of 10 races will take place in the opening series of the dinghy sailing events at the ongoing Summer Games. The boats ranked in the top 10 at the end of the series will make the medal round.
The 26-year-old Indian sailor ranked 35th in the event at Tokyo 2020. Meanwhile, Nethra narrowly missed out on an Asian Games podium last year, finishing fourth.
Earlier, Vishnu Saravanan, featuring in the men’s dinghy event, finished 10th in his first race and 34th in the second.

Badminton: PV Sindhu goes down to He Bingjiao in pre-quarters
India’s PV Sindhu suffered a 19-21, 14-21 defeat against He Bingjiao of the People’s Republic of China in the women’s singles round of 16 badminton match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
He Bingjiao’s success in 56 minutes at the La Chapelle Arena saw her make the quarter-final while Sindhu, for the first time in her Olympic career, did not win a medal.
World No. 13 Sindhu showcased great resilience in the first game. However, He Bingjiao, seeded sixth at Paris 2024, raised her game to take an important lead.
The Chinese shuttler raced to an early eight-point advantage in the second game. Sindhu mounted a comeback but it wasn’t enough to halt He Bingjiao’s momentum.
Earlier today, Lakshya Sen beat HS Prannoy in an all-Indian men’s singles round of 16 match. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, however, crashed out of the Paris 2024 Olympics badminton tournament in the men’s doubles event.

Golf: Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar complete round one
Indian golfers Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar teed off in round one of the men’s golf competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The event at the Le Golf National on Thursday saw Shubhankar finish ahead of Bhullar. Both golfers made their Olympic debut today.
Shubhankar is placed T29 with a total of 70 while Bhullar is T56 with a total of 75. The par for the course is 71.
They will be back in action tomorrow (August 2) for round two of the men’s golf event in Paris. The top three golfers at the end of four rounds will be awarded medals.
Score: Shubhankar Sharma (IND) was ranked T29 and Gaganjeet Bhullar (IND) was placed T56 in round one of the men’s golf tournament.
Reigning Olympic champion Alexander Zverev exits Paris 2024 in quarters
German tennis ace Alexander Zverev, the third seed, lost 5-7, 5-7 against Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the men’s singles quarter-final match on Thursday.
As a result, the Tokyo 2020 champion Zverev’s campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics came to an end. Partnering Laura Siegemund, he went down in the mixed doubles first round on Monday.
Musetti, seeded 11th in men’s singles, will face either top seed and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals. The Italian tennis player can confirm his first Olympic medal with a win in the next round.

Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan takes up incredible challenge at Paris 2024
Sifan Hassan, the Ethiopian-born Dutch runner, will be one to watch out for during the athletics events at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
She will take part in three long-distance races - 5000m, 10000m and marathon - in the French capital, starting Friday, August 2.
At Tokyo 2020, she won gold medals in the 5000m and 10000m races while bagging a bronze in the 1500m, an event she dropped for the ongoing Summer Games. The 31-year-old is also a two-time world champion and won the 5000m Diamond League final in 2019.
Hassan made her marathon debut last year and became the second-fastest female marathoner with a 2:13:44 victory at the Chicago Marathon, which helped her qualify for the event in Paris.

PV Sindhu vs He Bingjiao women’s singles R16 on agenda
India’s badminton star PV Sindhu will go up against He Bingjiao of the People’s Republic of China in the women’s singles round of 16 at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday at 10:00 PM IST.
With Lakshya Sen already in the last eight, PV Sindhu can become the second Indian shuttler to make the singles quarter-finals in Paris.
Sindhu’s opponent, He Bingjiao is seeded sixth at Paris 2024. The 27-year-old shuttler beat Azerbaijan’s Keisha Fatimah Azzahra and Kirsty Gilmour of Great Britain in her Group N matches to set up a pre-quarterfinal against the 10th-seeded Sindhu.
Incidentally, Sindhu won this fixture at Tokyo 2020 to bag the bronze medal, adding to her silver at Rio 2016. The Chinese shuttler, however, edges this head-to-head 11-9.
In their latest meeting, He Bingjiao beat PV Sindhu 21-16, 21-12 at the Asian Games last year.
Lakshya Sen aims for improvement ahead of quarters
Indian shutter Lakshya Sen beat compatriot HS Prannoy in the men’s singles round of 16 at the La Chapelle Arena on Thursday.
The 22-year-old badminton player, unseeded at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will now go up against Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, seeded 12th, in the quarter-final tomorrow (August 2). Chou Tien Chen has won three of his four previous matches against Lakshya Sen.
After the pre-quarterfinals, Sen described his emotions on facing another Indian player at the Olympics. “I think it was a good match. Playing him on the biggest stage, it was so nice that India played each other,” stated Sen.
"I can take some good things from this match, maybe even some things I can improve on,” the two-time Youth Olympics medallist added. “I think it’s going to be a tough match against a tricky opponent, so I will have to prepare well. As of now, I am just focusing on that match."
Sen is only the third Indian men’s singles badminton player to make the last eight at the Olympics. Only Parupalli Kashyap (London 2012) and Kidambi Srikanth (Rio 2016) have previously achieved the feat. However, neither could advance to the semi-final.
Indian golfer Diksha Dagar unscathed in car accident
Diksha Dagar, who is set to compete in women’s golf at Paris 2024, was involved in a car accident on Tuesday night. Her mother was hospitalised after the incident.
However, Diksha did not suffer any major damage and plans to feature at the Summer Games as previously planned, which was confirmed by her father Col. Naren Dagar.
Diksha and Aditi Ashok, who agonisingly missed out on a medal at Tokyo 2020, will represent India in the women’s golf competition from August 7.

Sailing: Vishnu Saravanan finishes two dinghy races
India’s Vishnu Saravanan finished 10th and 34th in the first and second races, respectively, of the men’s dinghy competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday.
A total of 10 races will take place in the opening series of the dinghy sailing events at the ongoing Summer Games. The boats ranked in the top 10 at the end of the series will make the medal round.
The 25-year-old Saravanan, ranked 20th at Tokyo 2020, is currently placed 25th with 44 net points. Stefano Peschiera (PER), Matt Wearn (AUS) and Eduardo Marques (POR) are the top three boats after two races.
Saravanan was a bronze medallist at the Asian Games held in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China last year.

Deepali Deshpande - the secret behind Swapnil Kusale’s success
Swapnil Kusale is now an Olympic bronze medal winner in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event, stepping on the podium at Paris 2024.
Kusale is based out of Pune where he trained under Deepali Deshpande, a former Indian shooter, ahead of the Olympics.
Deshpande, now 54, featured at Athens 2004 in the 50m rifle 3 positions event, which Kusale specialises in. She is also an Asian Games and Asian Shooting Championships silver medallist.

Badminton: Lakshya Sen trumps HS Prannoy in all-Indian pre-quarters
Lakshya Sen won 21-12, 21-6 against HS Prannoy in an all-Indian men’s singles round of 16 badminton match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Sen, a two-time Youth Olympics medallist, will face the 12th-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final tomorrow (August 2).
An Asian Games bronze medallist, Prannoy failed to match Sen's intensity on Thursday. Sen outpaced and out-thought Prannoy to seal the contest in 39 minutes at the La Chapelle Arena.
Sen, notably, extended his lead in the head-to-head battle against Prannoy (5-3) after winning their first clash against each other at the Olympic stage.
Earlier, the 22-year-old Sen beat Jonatan Christie and Julien Carraggi in Group L. On the other hand, Prannoy, 28, trumped Fabian Roth and Le Duc Phat in Group K. Both advanced to the pre-quarterfinals as group winners.
PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, will be in action tonight at 10:00 PM IST. She will take on He Bingjiao of the People’s Republic of China in the women’s singles round of 16 at Paris 2024.

Badminton: Satwik-Chirag go down to Chia-Soh in quarters
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 against Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the men’s doubles quarter-final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Ranked third in the badminton rankings, Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Chia-Soh made consecutive semi-finals at the Olympics.
The Indian pair were the dominant force in the first game. Chia-Soh, however, bounced back to take the second comfortably.
In a high-intensity third game, the decider, the Malaysian pair held their nerve and registered their ninth career win, first in four matches, against Satwik-Chirag.
On their way to the Asian Games title last year, Satwik-Chirag defeated Chia-Soh in the semi-finals. However, the Indian pair could not extend their three-match winning streak in this head-to-head.
Chia-Soh will take on top seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang from the People’s Republic of China in the last four at Paris 2024.

Shooting: Sift Kaur Samra unable to make 50m rifle 3P final
India’s Sift Kaur Samra and Anjum Moudgil failed to make the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions final after they crashed out in the qualification round today at Paris 2024.
The 22-year-old Sift, on her Olympic debut, totalled 575-22x to finish 31st, just one position from the bottom. Moudgil, meanwhile, was ranked 18th with a score of 584-26x. Only the top eight shooters will feature in the final tomorrow.
USA's Sagen Maddalena and Chinese shooter Zhang Qiongyue, incidentally, set an Olympic Qualification Record score of 593.
At the Asian Games 2023, Samra won the gold medal in the event with a world record score of 469.6. She also won the 50m rifle 3 positions titles in both individual and team events at the World University Games last year.
Moudgil, 30, featured at Tokyo 2020 but failed to make the final. In 2018, she won the World Championships silver in the 10m air rifle event.

Swapnil Kusale thankful after ‘dream’ Olympic medal
Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale won the bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3P final at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday.
Kusale, the first Indian to feature in the 50m rifle 3P final at the Olympics, also won the country’s first Olympic medal in the event.
Speaking after the final, Kusale said, “I have a lot of emotions right now. I would like to thank my parents, my family, my friends and everyone who has supported me.”
“This medal means a lot. It is not a gold, but I am pleased I got a medal.
“To get an Olympic medal is a dream,” stated the elated Indian shooter.
Kusale, meanwhile, will celebrate his 29th birthday on Tuesday, August 6. An Olympic bronze medal serves as a perfect early present for the Pune-based shooter.
Partnering Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Akhil Sheoran, Kusale clinched the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team title at the Asian Games last year.
HS Prannoy vs Lakshya Sen head-to-head record
HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen will compete in an all-Indian men’s singles round of 16 badminton match today at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The HS Prannoy vs Lakshya Sen badminton match will take place at Court 3 of the La Chapelle Arena at 5:40 PM IST.
As a result, an Indian badminton player is guaranteed to feature in the men’s singles last eight at the ongoing Summer Games.
Prannoy and Sen, meanwhile, have gone up against each other on seven occasions in international tournaments. Sen, a two-time Youth Olympics medallist, edges the head-to-head 4-3.
Sen beat Asian Games 2023 bronze medallist Prannoy 21-14, 21-15 at the India Open last year in the round of 32, their latest meeting.
Prannoy’s last victory over his compatriot came at the 2023 Malaysian Open, a 22-24, 21-12, 21-18 success.
Hockey: India suffer first defeat at Paris 2024
The Indian men’s hockey team were defeated 2-1 by Belgium, the reigning Olympic champions, in their penultimate Pool B match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Forward Abhishek scored in the 18th minute to give India a first half lead. However, Thibeau Stockbroekx (33’) and John-John Dohmen (44’) netted in the second to complete the Belgian comeback.
It was India’s first loss in the men’s hockey Pool B in Paris. The Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists won two of their three previous matches at Paris 2024. Harmanpreet Singh and Co. beat New Zealand 3-2 and trumped Ireland 2-0. They were held to a 1-1 draw against Argentina.
Belgium, on the other hand, maintained their winning streak in the French capital. Earlier, they beat Ireland 2-0, edged New Zealand 2-1 and secured a 6-2 success against Tokyo 2020 silver medallists Australia.
Both teams, meanwhile, are guaranteed to finish in the top four of the group and have secured their place in the men’s hockey quarter-finals.

Athletics: Priyanka Goswami falters in women’s 20km race walk
Indian athlete Priyanka Goswami finished 41st in the women’s 20km race walk at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday.
The 28-year-old runner clocked 1:39:55 at the Trocadero on her second Olympic appearance. She was the only Indian participant in the event in Paris.
Yang Jiayu of the People’s Republic of China won the gold medal with a season-best time of 1:25:54. Spain’s Maria Perez also notched a season-best 1:26:19 to bag silver and Australian athlete Jemima Montag settled for bronze with an Oceania record of 1:26:25.
At Tokyo 2020, Goswami was in the lead of the 20km race walk event at the halfway mark but slipped down to finish 17th. Later, she became the first Indian woman to medal in the 10000m race walk at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (silver).
Score: Priyanka Goswami (IND) ranked 41st in the women’s 20km race walk with a time of 1:39:55.
Archery: Pravin Jadhav bows out in round of 64
Indian archer Pravin Jadhav lost 6-0 against the People’s Republic of China’s Kao Wenchao in the men’s individual round of 64 match at the Les Invalides on Thursday.
As a result, Jadhav’s second Olympic campaign also ended without a medal. He made his Summer Games debut at Tokyo 2020.
The Chinese archer was impeccable on the day, scoring 10s on six of his nine arrows. The 28-year-old Jadhav, meanwhile, notched only four 10s in response as Kao Wenchao won the contest after three sets.
Earlier, Jadhav was also a part of the Indian men’s archery team, who were defeated in the quarter-final at Paris 2024 by eventual bronze medallists Turkiye.

Boxing: Nikhat Zareen ousted in round of 16
Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen lost 5:0 against the People's Republic of China's Wu Yu in the women’s 50kg round of 16 match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Wu Yu, the reigning 52kg world champion and Asian Games gold medallist, advanced to the last eight and is one win away from assuring herself a first Olympic medal.
Seeded first, Wu Yu was the dominant boxer in the first round. Two-time world champion Zareen fought back in the second but the Chinese boxer edged the round.
The third round, however, unanimously belonged to Wu Yu as Zareen's maiden Olympic campaign ended.
Earlier, the 28-year-old Zareen beat Germany's Maxi Carina Kloetzer by unanimous decision in the round of 32 at the Arena Paris Nord.

Shooting: Swapnil Kusale gives himself an early birthday gift, bags 50m rifle 3P bronze
Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale scored 451.4 in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions final to win the bronze medal.
He becomes the third Indian shooter to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following Manu Bhaker (women’s 10m air pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team) and Sarabjot Singh (10m air pistol mixed team). All three Indian medals in the French capital have been bronze, resulting in the country's best shooting result at the Olympics.
Notably, Kusale is also the first Indian shooter to medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3P event at the Olympics. Kusale will turn 29 on Monday, August 6, as an Olympic bronze medallist.
He scored 153.3 and 156.8 in the kneeling and prone rounds, respectively. In the standing position elimination stage, Kusale kept the Czechia shooter at bay to finish on the podium.
The 28-year-old Kusale had finished seventh in the qualification round on Wednesday with a score of 590-38x.
Liu Yukun from the People’s Republic of China, meanwhile, clinched the title with a total of 463.6. He is also the current world record holder (468.9). Ukraine’s Serhiy Kulish scored 461.3 and claimed the silver medal.

Athletics: Indians fail to medal in men’s 20km race walk
Indian runner Vikash Singh clocked 1:22:36 and ranked 30th in the men’s 20km race walk, a medal event, at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 28-year-old Vikash was the fastest among the three Indian athletes racing in the event at the Trocadero on Thursday. He, incidentally, had finished fifth in the event at the Asian Games last year.
Paramjeet Singh Bisht, on his Olympic debut, was 37th with a time of 1:23:48. However, national record holder Akshdeep Singh did not finish as he bowed out after 6kms.
Ecuadorian Brian Daniel Pintado won the gold medal with a time of 1:18:55. Brazil’s Caio Bonfim(1:19:09) and Spaniard Alvaro Martin (1:19:11) settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively.
India is yet to medal in the 20km race walk event at the Olympics.
Score: Vikash Singh (IND) finished 30th (1:22:36), Paramjeet Singh Bisht was 37th (1:23:48) and Akshdeep Singh did not finish in the men’s 20km race walk.

Race walk events delayed by 30 minutes
Athletics events at the Paris 2024 Olympics will start today with the men's and women's 20km race walk.
Indian athletes Akshdeep Singh, Vikash Singh and Paramjeet Singh Bisht will compete in the men's event while Priyanka Goswami is racing in the women's event. Medals are on offer in both races.
World Athletics, however, announced that the start for both events is delayed by 30 minutes due to thunderstorms in the morning in Paris.
